Probiotics and prebiotics are characterised in concern of mechanism of action. Frequent clinical indications where probiotics and prebiotics may be used are: acute diarrhoea, allergy, inflammatory bowel disease and H. pylori infection. Some of these diseases may accompany liver disorders or may even agreviate liver disease. Some liver specific disorders are discussed in concern of possible therapeutic application of probiotics and prebiotics as complementary treatment (eg. NASH, liver encephalopathy, liver cirrhosis, liver transplantation).
