The detection and characterization of focal liver lesions is one of the most important clinical problems due to their high incidence in the population. Lesions detected incidentally need to be characterized properly in terms of their being benign or malignant, as malignant lesions require appropriate staging and follow up of therapy. The technological advances in imaging techniques together with the growing knowledge of the tissue characteristics of focal liver lesions have greatly increased the role of imaging in the diagnosis and management of focal liver lesions. The article presents the spectrum of focal liver lesions and reviews their imaging features, focussing on ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging.
