Combined therapy with pegylated interferon and ribavirin represents the standard of care for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C according to current guidelines. There are two licenced products of pegylated interferon: peginterferon alpha-2a – Pegasys and peginterferon alpha-2b – PegIntron. This article present a review of published of head-to-head randomized and real-life trials to asses the efficacy and safety of the two treatments. The results of recent published studiest suggest that peginterferon alpha-2a is associated with higher sustained virological response than peginterferon alpha-2b.
