Autoimmune liver diseases are increasingly recognized, although their etiology is
still not entirely known and certainly, unquestionably composed. They demonstrate a progressive
destruction of the various liver structures in autoimmune mechanism. Autoimmune liver
diseases are also characterized by a strong correlation between the clinical picture and the
serologic makers (autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis) or radiologic tests (primary
sclerosing cholangitis). Major progression in diagnostic techniques in recent years revealed
significant difficulties and differences in recognizing and treatment of autoimmune liver diseases.
It suggests possibilities to coexist, interact with and transform in the course of these
diseases. To provide a modern perspective on key diagnostic and therapeutic issues appears
in this context to be a useful and expected.
